Important reasons for including Mondulkiri's elephant sanctuaries
and conservation projects in your Cambodian travel plan:

  1.  FOR THE ELEPHANTS - Our featured sanctuaries practice an ethical wildlife policy. There are no elephants tricks, tourist rides, or forced performances. Tours are organized in small visitor groups, engaging in respectful, natural activities with the elephants. Including careful feeding and bathing.
  2. FOR LOCAL COMMUNITIES - By visiting local projects you are supporting certified sustainable conservation organizations that protects forests, creates livelihoods & ongoing sustainable incomes for the indigenous village families, which greatly reduces financial dependence on logging & hunting. Ecotourism projects additionally educate and provide  training opportunities for many locals.
  3. SUSTAINABLE CONSERVATION MODEL  - We support the development of functional & sustainable, ecotourism development model: Financially independent thanks to visitor contributions and donations to local project.
  4. SUPPORT LOCAL LEADERSHIP - The great majority of Mondulkiri's local conservation project team are local residents of Mondulkiri, the goal is that project leadership and team would be fully local by 2025.
  5. VISIT MONDULKIRI - Following your sanctuary visit, you get to see more of Mondulkiri Province - one of Cambodia’s most beautiful scenic highland destination. Is elephant riding possible in Mondulkiri ?

Elephant riding is not including in our visitor programs. When working elephants join a retirement program, they live free of labor, including tourist ridies.

We predominantly observe free elephant care and do not force them to participate in visitor activities. Just like people, elephants have unique characters, some are very friendly & sociable with visitors, while others prefer seclusion, in this case, they are respectfully observed & appreciated from a safe distance.

Why are mahouts still riding some of the elephants ?
Some elephants, predominantly male elephants, require more exercise and time away from the main herd. They're sometimes ridden by mahouts while moved to other grazing areas for the safety of visitors & elephant herd members.
